A Gentle Start: Planning January Without Losing Your Mind

There’s something about December that just feels… loud.

The build-up to Christmas, the pressure of getting everyone a gift, the endless socialising, and the full-blown overconsumption of food, chocolate, and alcohol.

And don’t get me wrong, it’s mostly great. Festive chaos, cosy nights, saying yes to everything because it’s Christmas.

But then January 1st rolls around and suddenly we’re expected to do a complete 180. Now we must get fit and healthy. Set 50 goals. Drink green juice. Get our shit together, immediately!

Honestly? I’ve got whiplash.
Am I a Christmas alchy or a health freak? Because the switch is aggressive.

That being said darlings… I am on board with January goal setting, just not in a punish-yourself-for-December kind of way. I try throughout the year to set goals and keep some semblance of my health in check anyway, but January does feel like a natural reset. Maybe it’s the culture of it, maybe it’s because everyone else is doing it, but it definitely gives your motivation a little boost.

My goals for January aren’t wildly different from the ones I had before the Christmas build-up. I’m just choosing to be a bit more intentional with them, getting organised, writing things down, and setting the year up properly so it actually feels achievable.

Because when I look back at the year in December 2026, I want to feel proud of what I’ve done, not burnt out from trying to change everything in January.
So here’s how I’m easing myself in.

My January Cheat Sheet (aka: Planning Without the Pressure)

If you’re feeling that classic January mix of motivation and overwhelm, this is my very realistic cheat sheet for easing into the year, gently, calmly, and without losing your mind.

1. One Focus Is Plenty

Not five. Not ten.

Just one thing you’d like to feel better about by the end of the month, maybe routines, movement, money, or simply getting out of the house more.

If that’s all you manage? You’re still winning.

2. Declutter One Tiny Area

Not the whole house. Absolutely not.
One drawer. One cupboard. Or that mysterious bag of “important things” that follows you from room to room.

Small wins count. Big time.

3. Write a “Life Admin” List

All the boring stuff that lives rent-free in your head:

●Appointments
●Forms
●Emails you’ve been avoiding since November

Getting it out of your brain and onto paper is basically free therapy.

4. Plan Rest Like It Actually Matters

Because it does.

Rest isn’t a reward for being productive, it’s a requirement for surviving motherhood without losing your marbles.

Put rest in the planner, even if it’s just a quiet brew after the nursery run.

5. Leave Space for Nothing

Not every moment needs filling.

January is heavy enough without overbooking yourself in the name of “being organised”.

White space is allowed. Encouraged, even.

A Gentle Journal Reset (Free Printable)

Intentional journal log, printable

If you’re anything like me, January can feel like a strange in-between.

Not quite ready to charge into big goals, but also craving a bit of clarity after the chaos of December.

So instead of adding more pressure, I’ve created something a little softer.

I’ve put together a free Intentional Journal  Sheet, designed for mums and women who are rebuilding routines, confidence, or just a sense of themselves. It’s not about manifesting a brand-new life overnight or fixing everything at once. It’s about pausing, checking in, and setting intentions that actually fit real life.

The prompts are gentle, honest, and practical with just enough space to write without feeling overwhelming. You can sit with it for ten minutes during naptime, come back to it over a few days, or revisit it whenever you need a reset.

No rules. No pressure. Just a chance to reflect on where you’ve been and think about where you’d like to head next.
