After our usual Saturday morning of dance and football clubs, David decided we weren’t sitting around this weekend. His plan? A spontaneous trip to pick our own pumpkins at Sandhill Strawberry Farm in Rainhill and honestly, it turned out to be one of the loveliest afternoons we’ve had in ages.
We layered up in warm, comfy clothes, and even though it wasn’t particularly cold, Evelyn insisted on wearing her woolly hat for the full autumn vibe. I joined in with my fleece and body warmer and then promptly ruined the look by realising, when we arrived, that I’d forgotten to put my shoes on. Yep… I turned up in my slippers. Luckily, they were Crocs, so I could just about pull them off as “outdoor footwear.” By the time we left, they were full of half a tree’s worth of vines. What a div I am. 😂

Farmer Tom greeted us with a smile, handed us a wheelbarrow, and explained the prices; £7 for large pumpkins, £5 for medium, and £1 for small. Off we went into the patch, which was gloriously rustic and completely natural. No fancy hay-bale photo setups, no pre-picked pumpkins arranged in neat displays, just good old-fashioned pick it where it grew kind of fun.
The kids were in their element, tramping through the brambles and vines, inspecting every pumpkin like mini quality-control inspectors. We picked loads, put half of them back, and then picked more when we found better ones. Dominic tried to hide in the patch, very visibly, and gave himself away with one almighty trump. We all lost it laughing. Trumps will never not be funny in our house.
Spotting Dominic eyeing up the tractor, Tom kindly let him have a little sit in the driver’s seat, which absolutely made his day. It was such a wholesome, down-to-earth visit, and we’ll definitely be heading back in summer for some strawberry picking.
Can’t believe this little gem has been practically on our doorstep all this time!
